Do you wake up full of life and ready to take on the day with vigor? Or do you wake up dreading another day? If you are closer to the latter, then we need to talk!

As humans, we are anthropologically and socially programmed to be care takers. And many of us become excellent at that job. We spend YEARS perfecting it. We take care of our careers, we take care of our children, our spouses, our families, our friends, and even people who are merely acquaintances. We are unlikely to say no to anything that ANYONE asks of us. But guess who is usually missing from that list? YOU. You are probably not on the list of people who are cared for by you.  Well, maybe you do nice things for yourself, like working out, eating healthy sometimes, or getting a massage or facial now and again, but for some reason these things just make you feel guilty and you are likely to put them aside when life becomes hectic. And life will become hectic – it ALWAYS does!

And what happens when life seems to be spinning out of control? Demands are being made of you and you are already exhausted?  Life is usually in transition – change is inevitable. Your parents may be getting older and needing your care, your kids may be going off to college or getting married or having babies and asking for your help, you or your spouse may be having health issues or going through marital problems, maybe you’ve just divorced or your one of your friends has and needs your help, you are being asked to volunteer at the school or your job is asking you to travel more and take on more responsibility. Geez your mind races at night – I should cook healthier meals for my kids and why isn’t my son getting straight A’s? what am I doing wrong and I hope you get that promotion because college is coming up and I don’t know how I’ll pay for it! I just need a vacation, but I can’t afford the time or money and I just look and feel so OLD!  When you get to this place, you may find yourself to resenting everyone and everything that is going on even the things you used to enjoy! Do you know why this happens? It happens because you are not on your list!

Self-care is the most selfless thing you can do

Did you know if you nourished yourself every day and put yourself at the TOP of your list, that you would create a renewable source of energy and vitality? You can’t give from a place of depletion and you can’t give joyfully to others from depletion. If you do, you will end up tired, sick, and resentful. From that state, no one can be taken care of with joy. Keep your energy bucket full and only give from the overflow! That is the goal. Connect to yourself and your own needs first, then you can give easily from abundance. You will find that putting yourself FIRST is the most SELFLESS thing you will ever do. Because, when you become healthy and energetic, you will know joy every day. And when that happens, everyone you touch will know joy too!
